How Upwork fees work in 2026
Since May 2025, Upwork no longer charges a flat 10%. Instead, each contract carries a variable service fee of 0–15%, shown on the proposal screen before you commit and locked in for the life of the contract. Most freelancers see 10%; Direct Contracts (clients you bring yourself) cost 5%; Upwork Payroll and Any Hire contracts carry no service fee at all.
Costs beyond the service fee
Your real cost is higher than the headline percentage. Proposals cost Connects at $0.15 each (typically $1.20–$2.40 per proposal), and withdrawing your money costs $0.99–$50 depending on the method — $2.99 ACH for U.S. freelancers, more for PayPal or wire. This calculator adds both on top of the service fee so your “10% fee” shows as the true percentage it is.
Example
A $5,000 contract at a 10% fee with a $0.99 withdrawal costs $500 in service fees and $0.99 to withdraw — you take home $4,499.01, an effective fee of just over 10%. Before you accept a contract, check the fee tier on the proposal screen and plug it in here. Then make sure the rate still holds up with the freelance rate calculator.
